Magnesium chloride is the name for the chemical compound with the formula MgCl and its various hydrates MgCl  Anhydrous MgCl contains 25.5% elemental magnesium by mass. These salts are typical ionic halides, being highly soluble in water. The hydrated magnesium chloride can be extracted from brine or sea water.
Uses:
Weighting fluid, refrigerating brine and a cooling solution for drilling tools. Fire extinguishing media and fire-proofing of wood • Production of ceramics and cement.
In agriculture, where it is used to rectify soil deficiencies in magnesium and chlorine. Magnesium chloride promotes seed germination, causes plants to grow bushier, and produces more blooms. It deters pests such as slugs and voles.
